Fred from Ostripet

img00312-20111113-1428

A few years back my wife passed away after 43 years of marriage, about the same time I acquired my beautiful black labradorable Angel and with my daughter’s help she filled the gap in so many ways, I love her so much, taking good care of her health and well being has and always will be of upmost importance and concern.

At one point her skin began to itch constantly, it was painful to watch. I thought it would be best to look for a food that would nourish her better without costing the earth. A friend of mine introduced me to Ostripet and within 3 weeks Angel’s itching dropped considerably and over time except for the odd flea, virtually all together.

She swims in the Sea a lot and despite the salt water and sand, has not experienced skin problems since, my beautiful girl wears the glossiest black coat on the beach. After my company was liquidated I looked around for something to do, and decided to sell Ostripet with my daughter.  I come from a corporate background so this kind of work was foreign, not really what I am used to. But I have discovered that it is easy to sell something you believe in and the product really sells itself in the results. I haven’t looked back, my sales have begun to grow and not surprisingly through word of mouth. Most importantly it’s wonderful to see how other much loved doggies are thriving.

My stock consists of 20kg bags and 8kg bags. The 8kg comes in small and large pellets.
It is made without harmful preservatives or wheat, a higher and healthier protein and oil content, and is packaged in a thick foil bag to keep it fresh, with an expiry date for your peace of mind.
Prices range is R290 for 20 Kg and R 140 for 8 Kg - add R10 for home delivery.

Please email me if you would like to try Ostripet, my email address is  westcoastostripet@gmail.com or contact me on, Fred, 084 443 1807. Visit our website www.westcoastostripet.webs.com.

Jackie Savaria of In A Wink Web Design

My name is Jackie Savaria, and I’m a home-grown Capetonian with a beautiful Canadian surname – thanks to my lovely husband Bruno.
My webdesign career started many years ago when I was working for a big IT company in Cape Town.

After the birth of my first child, we moved to Worcester, looking for a more peaceful lifestyle. I was offered a position as IT Programming teacher at the Pioneer School for the Blind. This challenge was huge – as I knew a lot of programming, but VERY little of disabilities. However, I soon learnt the importance of understanding disabilities when programming (we taught HTML, JavaScript, Visual Basic and C++ over a year period to an average of 5 blind students). It was clear to me that its ‘easy’ to write a program or website, but much more difficult to ensure that the program and website is accessible to people with disabilities.

It was a great learning curve, and also the start of my passion for creating websites that are in fact coded according to W3C principles, and tested for accessibility with the necessary adaptive software. I truly believe in doing things right the first time, and therefore we take absolute care in our designs – be it in understanding our client’s needs, learning about our client’s product in order to deliver the most appropriate end result or designing for our client’s audience. At In A Wink we understand that your website is one of your most important marketing tools. It is therefore designed to reflect your style and to market your product effectively. You will be proud to refer your clients to it.
We include SEO (Search Engine Optimization) principles during design, which simply means that we want the search engines like Google& Yahoo to rate your website as high as possible. We also follow the necessary web standards, which will make your website accessible to people with disabilities – something that is close to our hearts. Focusing on the smaller company, home based business or individuals you are sure to get personalised services at all times.

Fiona Southwood of Sunshine Academy

The Sunshine Academy is proud to offer study skills workshops for children in grade 4 to grade 7 (it can also be run for parents, teachers, au pairs, homework clubs and aftercare workers).
The workshop:
  • Helps children identify their natural learning styles
  • Demonstrates practical study methods to support different learning styles
  • Provides creative study tips and exam techniques

I developed the Sunshine Academy when my children got to grade 4 and 5: I realised that even though they were bright, hard working children and were privileged to be in a good school with dedicated teachers, they struggled to work out how to prepare for exams.  I have experience as a lecturer and have worked in organisational training and development for many years, so I set about designing material to help them and this soon turned into a business.

The workshop is practical, simple and creative: I remind children that the ability to learn is natural and show them that the process of learning can be FUN! Each child leaves with a 10 page workbook and I encourage a follow up session with the parent/s, so that they might determine the best way to support their child. I also offer ongoing sessions for children who need more detailed assistance.

I run the Sunshine Academy on Saturday mornings and in school holidays (09h30 to 12h30); it is also available as a weekly programme (2 x 1 ½ hours or 3 x 1 hour depending on timetables).

Emeraan Kherekar of M & M Designs

I started t-shirt designing and printing 7 years ago as a hobby when I bought my first screen-printing kit. I experimented mainly with slogan t-shirts and simple silhouette designs as it was easier and cheaper to print. The business idea started when some colleagues ask me to print some slogan t-shirts for a team building event.

I decided to print double the requested quantity to check whether anyone else might be interested in buying some printed t-shirts. The whole batch was sold within an hour.
Soon afterwards I started getting in orders from other colleagues requesting printed t-shirts for their social clubs and sports teams. I also started servicing small businesses of family members and friends who needed t-shirts printed for their staff and general corporate wear.
I found that most small business and sport clubs often required small quantities of t-shirts to be printed and screen-printing is quite expensive when doing small production runs. I purchased a vinyl cutter and heat press, which enabled me to print smaller quantities at a similar cost to that of a larger screen-print production run.

I now work from home full time doing t-shirt printing and designing. We do printing on all kinds of t-shirts, sportswear, jackets and hoodies. Only the best quality garments are used or you could supply your own. We print letters, numbers, logos and slogans with high quality vinyl on 1 -100 garments. Screen printing is optional for quantities of 50 and more.

Clifford Martin

Every now and again we hear about a story that just stays with us. This is one such story and one we wanted to share it with all of you. This is a story of determination, courage and of not letting situations get the better of you and of believing in the person you are and striving towards a dream, regardless of the circumstances.

If you feel you would like to help Clifford in anyway perhaps a sponsorship, then please contact us at info@communitynetwork.co.za. We will gladly put you in touch with Clifford.
Clifford Martin is a 32 year old, male paraplegic who has had a passion for sports from a very young age.

He was involved in a car accident at the age of 15 that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Prior to his accident, he was a very enthusiastic sportsman and obtained his South African junior colors in Rugby, athletics and Surfing as well as Border colors in Rugby, Athletics, Surfing and Chess.
The accident may have left him paralyzed, but definitely didn't shatter his dream or his passion for sports. Being forced to give up on his Rugby, athletics and surfing career, Clifford pursued a career in disabled powerlifting, bench pressing, javelin, shotput and discus with his main focus being on bench pressing.
He has thus far been involved in many events and competitions. To name a few:
o SSN Powerlifting-endurance powerlifting competition - 1st place (competed against abled bodied men)
o DB Supplements - endurance powerlifting competition - 1st place
o USN Challenge- endurance powerlifting competition - 1st place
o Zone fitness bench pressing challenge 2011 - 1st
o Bench pressing Western Province colors - 2010, 2011 and 2012
Furthermore he has competed in many wheelchair races and has done many fun walk/runs:
o The Mandela 27 year Freedom Race
o The Gun Run
o The Gandhi Peace Walk
o My School Move For Health-6km race
o Blue Downs Fun Run
o Cape Town Big Walk
o Eskom Mitchelle's Plain Wheelchair Race
Clifford competed at the SA Champs in March 2012 in Kwa Zulu Natal.
Being unemployed rendered it very difficult for Clifford to finance all his sporting activities however through the help of sponsors like the Helping Hands Organisation and VSlots, he was able to compete at the SA Champs for bench pressing and was placed 2nd.
It was at the SA Champs that Clifford broke the SA record TWICE, however his record was subsequently also broken. We are all very proud of Clifford and wish him the best of luck.

Liret Swanepoel of Boston Pilates

Liret Swanepoel

Why Pilates?

Pilates is a safer and sensible approach to health and wellness. It improves overall strength, flexibility, balance, posture, mobility, and stamina and reduces back and neck pain.

Seven years ago, I could no longer stand the constant back pain I endured with being a scoliosis sufferer. A friend told me about Pilates; it turned out to be my saving grace. It dramatically reduced my back pain where I now have very seldom any lower back pain.

Sudden career changes pushed me into the direction where I decided to complete the necessary training and open up my own studio to help other people.

I am also currently completing an International Diploma in Clinical Nutrition, I would like to incorporate this in the near future as part of a holistic approach in offering people a service to change their current rushed , mal nourished and increasingly sedentary lifestyle into a healthy lifestyle.
